Ceres Shopping Bag

About:

Learn an amazing new openwork criss-cross stitch by knitting this light, drawstring summery bag. It’s perfect for carrying around on holiday whilst browsing local markets. The criss-cross effect is created by knitting dropped stitches and then crossing them over and knitting them into place, creating a uniquely intricate design. (LK Magazine)

Directions

NOTE:

This is worked in one piece starting with the hem

Using 4mm circular needle cast on 114 sts. Add stitch marker and join in the rnd being careful not to twist
Rnd 1-7: k
Rnd 8: p
Rnd 9: k
Rnd 10: p
Row 11: k57, turn
Row 12: k to marker, turn
Rep Rows 11-12 twice more, then Row 11 again
Cut yarn

Rejoin yarn to other side of bag at opposite side to marker, rep Rows 11-12 three times, then Row 11 once more.
You should now be back at your marker.
Rejoin in the rnd by connecting hem all the way around as folls (if you don’t want to use this method you can sew hem in place at the end):
Fold your hem edge so the WS are facing each other. The natural fold will be with the first p row. Pick up one st from your cast on edge and k tog with the next st on the LH needle.
Cont this way until you have completed the rnd and your hem is connected. When you get to tail end of yarn cut previously, leave it out of hem so you can weave it in later.

I-Cord Straps

Using 4mm dpns, cast on 3sts and create two separate icords measuring 120cm each as folls:
Row 1: k3, do not turn, slide sts to opposite end of needle and pull yarn across back of sts ready to work next row
Rep Row 1 until I-cord meas 120cm

To Make Up

Attach a pin to one end of your first I-cord and thread it through one of the openings in top edge of bag. Continue all the way around until I-cord comes out of same opening you started with. Remove pin and tie a knot in top of I-cord joining it together. Attach pin to second Icord. Repeat process with other opening in bag’s edging.
